Expat in Turkey – Why Istanbul?

By Mona Al Sakka

Imagine stepping on a plane with a one-way ticket for an international flight, accompanied by your two teenage daughters and elderly parents, unsure of what to expect in this new chapter of your life – that’s how I came to Turkey in 2020 from Dubai.

As a single mother and expatriate in Istanbul, my life has been both exciting and challenging. Before embarking on this journey, I had heard mixed reviews – and advice – about living here, leaving me with a sense of anticipation. Little did I know that my experience would turn out to be a remarkable adventure that continues to captivate me.

We arrived on a scorching summer day in August and checked into a hotel in Bahçeşehir that would serve temporarily as our home. Before putting down any roots, I wanted to find a suitable school for my daughters and a residence nearby.

Known for my meticulous planning, I had already gotten a recommendation and the contact information of a real estate agent who could help us. His name was Burak, a Turk who could speak fluent English, our one common language. We met the following day to look at potential residences in the area I had chosen. It didn’t take long before I realized how fortunate we were to have found him. Not only did he help us find the right home, Burak also scheduled our electricity connection and other house maintenance work. But he really went above and beyond assisting me with my daughters’ school registration and negotiating discounts on tuition fees – tasks that would have been very difficult for someone who doesn’t speak much Turkish. It was in these first few weeks that it became very clear that I needed to learn more if I wanted to fully immerse myself in Istanbul’s vibrant culture. Fast forward to July 2023—nearly three years later—I am enjoying my life here, despite the ongoing language challenges.

So, why did I choose to move to Istanbul in the first place? Let me count the reasons.

First and foremost, Istanbul offers an exceptional educational landscape. Whether you’re looking for international or local institutions, the city is home to numerous world-class schools and universities. Parents seeking quality education for their teenage daughters will find a plethora of options that emphasize academic excellence, character development and a holistic approach to learning. Istanbul ensures that young minds receive a well-rounded education, setting them on the path to success.

Moreover, living in Istanbul exposes families and their children to a multicultural environment. The city is a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and ideas from around the world. Teenagers have the opportunity to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering open-mindedness, empathy and a global perspective. This exposure to diversity becomes an invaluable asset in today’s interconnected world.

Istanbul’s historical and cultural heritage is yet another compelling reason to choose this city. Formerly the capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, Istanbul abounds with architectural marvels like the Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace and the Blue Mosque. Exploring these historical treasures with my daughters has been educational and awe-inspiring, instilling in them a deep sense of heritage and identity.

When it comes to leisure and entertainment, Istanbul offers a vibrant social scene. Shopping malls, cinemas, theaters, concert venues and art galleries cater to a wide range of interests. Teenagers will never find themselves short of things to do—attending concerts, exhibitions or exploring trendy neighborhoods. Istanbul’s nightlife is particularly renowned, providing a dynamic and exciting atmosphere for young adults to enjoy.

Despite being a bustling metropolis, Istanbul also boasts proximity to nature and breathtaking landscapes. The city is surrounded by the stunning views of the Bosphorus Strait, where families can enjoy boat rides or peaceful picnics along the shores. In addition, Istanbul offers free access to beautiful parks and forests, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities, hiking and reconnecting with nature. These natural retreats provide an ideal escape from the fast-paced urban life.

In conclusion, Istanbul presents a unique blend of cultural, educational and recreational opportunities. From quality educational institutions and a diverse social scene to access to historical and natural wonders, Istanbul offers an enriching environment for teenagers to grow, learn and flourish. By embracing the city’s vibrant spirit, families can provide their children with a fulfilling and well-rounded experience that will shape their future in a positive way.

Despite the challenges, my decision to move to Istanbul has proven to be a good one. Waking up in this city every day, I look forward to the continued adventures, and I’ll be sharing them with you here in this column.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and thoughts on actual migration to an entirely new country and that too shifting out of the UAE. There are many travel bloggers but rare such stories or information on migrating to countries like Turkey. It is a beautiful country but learnt alot about its education system and accommodating culture. Not many countries left where a local person goes out of the way to assist and support a non native speaking emigrant. Wishing you and the family all the best and a successful future to the daughters. Amen!
