Steve McCurry photographs at Istanbul Sinema Müzesi

Steve McCurry’s photographs are currently on display at the Istanbul Sinema Müzesi. Known for capturing iconic images like the “Afghan Girl” on the cover of National Geographic in 1985, McCurry’s work depicts people in their natural environments, sharing their stories and perspectives without any barrier between them and the viewer. The exhibition showcases 51 of McCurry’s most renowned photographs taken across the globe over the past three decades. It also features his observations from his visit to Istanbul in 2011 and includes the portrait of Ara Güler, an Armenian-Turkish photojournalist known as “the Eye of Istanbul” or “the Photographer of Istanbul.”

McCurry describes his photography as a quest for unguarded moments and the essence of a person’s soul reflected in their face. He recognizes the power of photography as a medium, transcending language and capturing unique moments frozen in time.

I think life is too short not to be doing something which you really believe in.

It takes a lot of time, patience, observation, and persistence to successfully capture these spontaneous moments.

Leave home or leave your comfort zone. You don’t necessarily need to travel to distant places, but you need to get out of your realm of comfort and explore, wander and observe.

The exhibition is open to the public at Istanbul Sinema Müzesi until July 31st, 2023.
